Hi everyone! So sorry for being inactive. It’s been awhile isn’t it? I hope I was not forgotten. The thing is, my beloved granny passed away 2 weeks ago. She was 96. We stayed together all these while so this loss was an impact for me and I am still grieving.
My granny was a very talented self-taught homecook and seamstress. She never wore anything bought, every piece of her clothing was self-made. She makes the world best kaya (coconut jam), I remember seeing her patiently stirring the jam for hours over charcoal heat and the smell of fragrant pandan and coconut was intoxicating. And I will never forget my first taste of her orange marmalade. I was never a fan of marmalade but hers had always amazed me. Whenever she made that, the house instantly smells of fresh citrusy orange and we couldn’t wait to spread it on toasts and buns.
Food wastage was a no no, she had always had ways to use up the food scraps and transformed them into something delicious. The most memorable ‘”food scrap” dish was her stir-fry watermelon. She would use the white part of the watermelon which we usually discard and cooked it with dried white bait. It’s one of my favorite dishes and I can’t find it anywhere else. One day I will try to recreate and share it here. Another unforgettable dish was her jackfruit curry which was light, fruity and very tasty. Truly yummy! Oh my… how I miss her as I writing these.
No recipe for now. Just pictures of her mortar and pestle which she had been using since who knows when but definitely before I was even born.
However, I do have a line of of interesting recipes coming up real soon, lotsa catch up to do…
